You can have the right bag, the right earrings, even the right sunglasses. And you’ll look just fine. But there’s an aspirational accessory that delivers more punch than any of these smaller items. That accessory can be yours when you choose from among the best beach cruiser bikes.

Yes, a beach cruiser bike is an accessory, especially when you choose a cute model in an adorable color that includes the perfect features. I’ve found just the one, and I’ll let you know what it is below. But first: What makes a beach cruiser such a must-have accessory?

Why Beach Cruisers?

I can hear you say it: I don’t live near the beach. And my answer to you is: That’s OK.

In fact, I don’t live near a beach. It would take me 4 hours (or more) to reach one. I ride my beach cruiser around town anyway — and I don’t even wear a helmet, but don’t tell my parents.

Why do I ride a beach cruiser? I’ll tell you my 3 main reasons:

1. Because Outdoors is Awesome …

I live in Texas, so summer is a little hot for the beach cruiser. If anything, I’ll ride my cruiser from my house to a little vintage furniture shop that’s about a mile away. The vintage furniture shop is around the corner from a small breakfast joint. Here’s my schedule on these morning:

  • 8:30: Leave home on bike
  • 8:32: Stop to talk to neighbor
  • 8:40: Arrive at vintage shop
  • 9:30: Depart vintage shop with small home décor items riding in my handlebar basket
  • 9:35: Arrive at breakfast joint
  • 9:40: Sit down with cup of coffee, egg-white omelet and newspaper (yes, a real newspaper … I like to unplug when riding my cruiser)
  • 10:30: Depart for home, a to-go cup of coffee in my handlebar drink holder
  • 10:38: Stop to talk to different neighbor
  • 10:40: Arrive back home

In the span of about 2 hours, I can have a morning’s worth of fun on my beach cruiser before it gets too hot. The outdoors is awesome on these Saturday mornings, and it’s only going to get better as the weather turns and fall arrives. Come October, I’ll be on my beach cruiser every day of the week, at all hours.

There’s something exhilarating about the wind sweeping through my hair, the sound of bikes tires on concrete and asphalt, and buzzing around tree-lined streets. We all spend so much of our time indoors, which includes inside of cars. A beach cruiser is the perfect way to get in touch with the awesomeness of the outdoors.

2. Because Biking is Social

See how I talked to neighbors in the section above? There’s something about getting out on my beach cruiser that connects me to my neighborhood and the people who live there. No one talks to someone driving by in a car with windows up. Everyone talks to someone rolling by on a vintage beach cruiser.

The same applies when I reach my destination. The vintage shop owner and workers know me as the woman who rides the beach cruiser on Saturday mornings. The breakfast joint workers know me, too. On hot summer afternoons, I’ll ride my beach cruiser around the corner to the neighborhood pool because it’s too hot to do anything but swim. And guess what? The lifeguards know me, too. From among the hundreds of visitors to the pool on a July or August day, I’m known because of my beach cruiser. They remember me. They talk to me.

It’s nice. And it’s something I didn’t experience until I got my beach cruiser.

3. Because Fitness is Style

At the end of the 20th century, thin was sexy. Remember Kate Moss? But now, firmly into the 2000s, fit is sexy and stylish.

A beach cruiser is the perfect way for me to meld fitness and style. While I’m on my cruiser, and I’m looking good while also burning calories. I feel better when I get home. And it’s kind of nice to break a sweat and feel the air on my skin on those hot summer days.

You may be thinking: Doesn’t it take you longer to get places? Maybe, but not all that much longer. Think about how long it takes to get in your car, to navigate traffic, and then to find a parking spot. And what if you need gas? On my cruiser, it’s plug-and-play — I hop on and I’m gone.

A beach cruiser is a great way to get in shape while also taking advantage of an accessory that even some of the most stylish women overlook.

Still on the fence? OK, just look at the gallery of beach cruiser photos below, and tell me the lifestyle isn’t one that you’ve always dreamed of:

Your Ultimate Option From Among the Best Beach Cruiser Bikes

Are you looking for recommendations on the best beach cruiser bikes? You’ve come to the right place. But I’m not going to rundown a list of 3 or 5 or 10 options. I’m going to share the only option you’ll ever need when searching for a beach cruiser: The Nel Lusso Women’s Cruiser Bike from Huffy.

What does “nel lusso” mean? It’s an Italian phrase that means “in luxury.” And that’s how I feel when I’m on my Nel Lusso Cruiser: in luxury.

I could rant and rave and express my love for this bike all day and all night. But let me sum up why this is your best option from among the best beach cruiser bikes in 7 quick points:

1. Style

This cruiser is absolutely gorgeous. It casts the perfect mid-century silhouette, the one that you would want from a vintage beach cruiser. It’s available in ideal throwback colors, too, including a pearl white, butter yellow and sky blue — I chose the sky blue because it reminds me of the tile in the guest bath at my grandparents’ old house.

And this cruiser also features leather accents that take the style to the next level. The seat, handlebars, drink holder and basket all deliver a leathery brown pop that contrasts nicely with the blue.

2. Simplicity

You can find beach cruisers that have handlebar brakes and multiple speeds. This is nice to have, I guess. But I prefer the simplicity of reverse brakes and a single speed. Not much can go wrong with a simple bike, so I never need repairs and the only maintenance I need is air in the tires — which I can do for free at the neighborhood service station within biking distance.

3. Accessories

A basket is a must-have when looking for a beach-cruiser. Where else are you going to put your stuff — a loaf of baguette from the market, for example. This cruiser also includes fenders that keep water and mud from flying up at you, and the drink holder is so clutch, especially on those Saturday mornings that include cups of coffee.

4. Brand

I’m no trendsetter with beach cruisers. Many style-minded women are starting to discover them. And, in response, a number of fly-by-night companies are now selling beach cruisers, but they don’t really know what they’re doing. The cruisers they offer are expensive but cheap, if you know what I mean.

Huffy is a different type of brand. It’s been in the bike business long before beach cruisers became trendy. You can count on Huffy to deliver a quality bike that’s going to last a while, and they’ve proven with the Nel Lusso Women’s Cruiser Bike that they know what they’re doing on the looks front, too.

5. Price

Remember how I told you I love this cruiser’s simplicity? Simplicity also makes a cruiser less expensive. You can spend upward of $300 on a beach cruiser that includes handlebar brakes and multiple speeds. But you don’t need those things: This cruiser is smooth and easy to ride, and the reverse brakes work just fine.

Pass on the features you don’t need, and you can get this beach cruiser for less than $200, depending on where you’re shopping.

6. Value

This cruiser is made of lightweight alloy, which is good for 2 reasons. First, lightweight means it’s easy to peddle and get from one place to another, which is nice. And, second, alloy is resistant to corrosion. You can expect this beach cruiser to look great and to last you a long time. That’s value.

7. Fun

I want you to know this above all else: This cruiser is fun, fun, fun. It’s so much fun to ride. During the week when I’m working, it’s the thought of time spent on my beach cruiser that keeps me going. And I love my job! What if I didn’t? The beach cruiser might be the only thing getting me out of bed in the morning.

What to Look for in a Beach Cruiser Bike

I highly recommend the Nel Lusso Women’s Cruiser Bike from Huffy. But let’s assume for a moment that you want to shop around and see what else is available. Here are the 5 things to consider.

1. Speeds

Do you want a single-speed or multiple-speed bicycle? Multiple speeds give you more control over the bike, but in general a beach cruiser doesn’t need different speeds — it’s not a performance product. Single-speed options get the job done, and they tend to be less expensive, too.

2. Brakes

You’ll find 2 different types of brakes: handlebar brakes and reverse brakes. Handlebar brakes are most often found on multiple-speed cruisers, and reverse brakes are most often found on single-speed options. Again, you may prefer handlebar brakes, but you’ll be paying more for a feature you don’t really need — reverse brakes work just fine.

3. Price

How much are you looking to spend as you search for your ideal option from among the best beach cruiser bikes? You can drop $300 on a multiple-speed bike with handlebar brakes. But you can get a high-quality cruiser for less than $200 if you’re willing to forgo some of these more advanced features. A beach cruiser need not be expensive to be both stylish and functional.

4. Accessories

When I started looking for the best beach cruiser bikes, I knew I wanted specific accessories. A basket was non-negotiable. A drink holder was a nice addition I didn’t even know I wanted until I had it — and now I couldn’t do without. A mounting rack on the back is a nice-to-have. The only accessory I added to my beach cruiser was a handlebar bell. I like ringing it.

5. Lifestyle

Here’s a serious consideration: Does your lifestyle and where you live lend itself to beach cruiser ownership? I live in a fairly contained neighborhood that allows me access to shops, parks, restaurants and markets without crossing highways or even busy streets. I can comfortably take my beach cruiser almost anywhere without wearing a helmet. But not everyone is in this situation. If you live surrounded by highways and busy streets, you may not be as comfortable taking your beach cruiser where you’d like to go.

Final Thoughts on the Best Beach Cruiser Bikes

I can honestly say: Few products have delivered as much value, enjoyment and fun as my beach cruiser. For an investment of less than $200, I have a beach cruiser that looks fantastic and that helps me stay in shape by doing things that I need and want to do anyway. What could be better than that?

And, yes, I do strongly recommend the Nel Lusso Women’s Cruiser Bike from Huffy, but you’ll find lots of good options when searching for the best beach cruiser bikes. Pick out one that meets your needs (using the 5 decision factors listed above). And be sure to let us know what you end up with. Maybe I’m missing out on an even better beach cruiser?
