Top Essential Oil Brands
I have a friend who swears by essential oils. Stinky shoes? Here’s an essential oil. Feeling overwhelmed? Try this essential oil. Have an upset child? Break out the essential oil. Want to bake peppermint cookies? Here’s the perfect essential oil.
I used to think she was crazy. But then something even crazier happened: Every time she gave me an essential oil, it worked.
Now, my friend isn’t alone in turning to essential oils for almost everything. The essential oil market swelled to more than $7.5 billion in 2015, and it’s expected to grow to more than $10 billion by 2022. That’s a lot of oil being used by a lot of consumers.
And, as you can imagine, the essential oil market is overrun by options. How do you know what the top essential oil brands are? Lucky for you, my friend and I have a lot of experience testing them out.
Here’s a look at my top essential oil brands, plus some sample kits to get you started if you want to explore different types of essential oils and the magic they can work in your home.

1. Edens Garden — Our Top Pick!
This wasn’t my first foray into essential oils, but it was definitely my favorite. I’ve ordered this exact gift set several times, first for me, and then as gifts for friends on birthdays and other special occasions. This is the essential oils set for essential oils evangelists, which is why I love it and why I choose to give it away so often.
The two things I love most about this Edens Garden Beginners Best Gift Set are: 1) the blend of oils you get, 2) the size of oils you get, and 3) that they are 100% pure and authentic, which enhances safety in application.
Some of my favorite applications include mixing grapefruit with coconut oil to reduce cellulite, using patchouli and lavender as a facial scrub, and using rosemary and orange as an air freshener. Oh, and I didn’t just make up the part about peppermint cookies in the lead — I use the peppermint to make some killer after-dinner treats.

2. NOW Foods
NOW Foods offers another terrific option with its 10-Oil Variety Pack Sampler. You get a different blend of oils than what you’ll see with Edens Garden, and you get more of them — each container is 1 ounce. (For comparison’s sake, 1 ounce is about 30 ml.)
Citronella, of course, acts as a natural mosquito repellent, which has worked nicely through the Texas summer. Clove and orange blended together serves as a natural pest control agent, and you can also use jasmine as a natural perfume. I love that last application as I find that too many consumer perfumes overpower a room. The jasmine delivers a nice, subtle scent that hits the right note for me.

One thing to love about this 14 Essential Oil Set from Plant Therapy is that it includes not just base oils but also synergies. You get some of the more traditional essential oils like sweet orange, lemon and tea tree, but you also get blended synergies that are designed to help with certain challenges: fighting germs, relaxing, boosting immunity and more.
At first, these synergies set off alarm bells in my head: Are they still pure essential oils? But they are. This is the type of gift set you’ll want if you prefer to simply apply the oils rather than blending different types of oils for specific benefits.
Is the Plant Therapy 14 Oil Essential Set right for you?
Let me start by saying that this is a fantastic product. In fact, this is another set that offers both base essential oils and synergies that are designed to help with breathing, digestion and other challenges.
My one hang-up with the doTERRA Family Essentials Kit is the cost. This is a nice product available at a premium price, but I just don’t see the value above and over that available with the products above.
That said, you do get some oils that aren’t found in the other kits. For example, oregano is known to boost immunity, and it’s a little bit harder to find in these gift sets. Similarly, melaleuca is known to help with acne when mixed with tea tree and raw honey … but you don’t get tea tree in this gift set.
This product might offer the specific oils you’re looking for, and you may fall in love with its synergies. But I think there are better values to be had.

Trust me when I tell you that the essential oils listed above are outstanding. But, if you’re still balking at the price tag, I have the perfect solution for you: this Gift Set from Essential Oil Labs.
You get 3 classic essential oils: peppermint, tea tree and lavender. And you get plenty of them at a rock-bottom price. You won’t find a better tester package at a better price than what you get with this product. You enjoy 3 high-quality essential oils at less than $20. If you love them, you can invest more into getting a wider range of oils.
I mentioned above that I have a favorite gift set for good friends. This is more the gift I like to get for acquaintances — the types of almost-friends whose birthday parties you’re surprised to get invited to.

Why Use Essential Oils in the First Place?
How much time do you have? Essential oils have almost limitless applications, and I doubt you want to spend hours and hours hearing about them. Over at Dr. Axe’s site, you can find a list of 101 essential oil uses and benefits. But know that the many applications for essential oils fall into 4 broad categories:
1. Natural Medicine
Essential oils are perhaps best known for applications as natural medicine. You can blend different oils to create synergies known to help kick colds, improve allergies, reduce morning sickness, soothe achy muscles, boost immunity, treat poison ivy and poison oak, reduce back and neck pain and much more.
I may use essential oils when cleaning my place more than I used them for anything else. Synergies can be applied toward freshening air, washing clothes, vacuuming, eliminating stains and soap scum, cleaning burnt pans, eliminating mold, purifying refrigerators, rinsing dishes and more.
There’s also a spa-and-relaxation approach to essential oils. Synergies can be used to relieve tension, improve sleep quality, calm upset children, enhance relaxation, lessen depression and more.
And then there are the beauty benefits of essential oils, which are plentiful. They can be used to strengthen nails and hair, reduce cellulite, smooth wrinkles, whiten teeth, treat acne, freshen breath, eliminate stretch marks, moisturize skin and more.
You’ll find plenty of other far-flung uses for essential oils: repelling mosquitos, blocking UV rays, eliminating cigarette smoke scents, etc. I can’t recommend the Dr. Axe page enough — the one that includes 101 ways to use essential oils. This is my go-to source for ideas and synergies for all types of applications.
But, by and large, applications are in some way related to natural medicine, cleaning, aromatherapy and beauty. Do you have other uses? I’m definitely interested, so let us know in the comments section below.
Final Thoughts on Top Essential Oil Brands
I can admit that there’s not a ton of research that backs the effectiveness of essential oils. So you’ll just have to take it from my own experience: Essential oils have become essential to my home and my lifestyle. Above, you can browse through plenty of option, some that let you stick your toe into the water and others that let you dive right in. Choose the best for you, and at least give it a shot. And remember: I was skeptical, too, once upon a time.
