What to be for Halloween 2017
There’s nothing better than hitting just the right note with a Halloween costume. You’re looking for something timely, relevant and instantly recognizable — something that’s fun to wear and that gets a chuckle from others.
The good news is that 2017 is full of great costume options, both for men and women — and for couples, too. We’ve sorted through all the options to bring you the very.
Here’s a look at what to be for Halloween in 2017, if you’re looking to make an impression at whatever party you attend on Oct. 31.
Best Halloween Costumes for Men in 2017
1. Pennywise — Most Terrifying!
But I’ll tell you this: An image of Pennywise is enough to make my skin crawl. And I’m not even one of those people with a fear of clowns. I love clowns. I had a clown at my birthday party when I was a kid.
But rarely does a character from a scary movie make such a timely and relevant Halloween costume. I suppose this could work for women, too, but Pennywise is the runaway winner of most terrifying Halloween costume for 2017 and best choice for men.
2. Kylo Ren
While you may feel like you haven’t heard much about Kylo Ren recently, you’re about to hear so much about him you’d wish Darth Vader had finished off Kylo’s mother back on the original Death Star.
The new Star Wars film (Episode VIII) will be released right around the holidays, and the buzz is only going to grow louder between now and then. By Halloween, this will be a hot costume — and it’s gotta be a lot of fun to carry a light saber around for a night, right?
OK, so this movie bombed with audiences. I didn’t see it, but apparently it wasn’t worth seeing. And also, on a side note, I would have guessed years ago that Zac Efron’s career would be on a much stronger trajectory by now, but what do I know?
I do know this: Baywatch has always been a strong costume option for both men and women (see more on this below). But never has a Baywatch costume been more appropriate than in the year when it’s feature film released, even if it bombed.
One thing to consider about this costume: It’s beachwear, so it’s bound to be comfortable. And it even comes with the official Baywatch jacket, so you don’t even have to worry (too much) about the weather on Oct. 31.
Here’s another relevant film, and (finally) one that I actually did see at the theater. Yeah! I will say, though, this Beast costume is just about as frightening as Pennywise when I look at it. But that’s what Halloween is all about, right?
I think this might be my favorite choice for couples in 2017. Being Donald and Melania (or Bill and Hillary for that matter) is so 2016. Why not jump on the Disney bandwagon for 2017? Lord knows that Disney is much more of an escape (and far less polarizing) than politics. And Halloween should be nothing if not an escape that’s free from polarization.
5. Jon Snow
Game of Thrones has a strong and passionate following. While it may not draw the viewership of some network television shows, it’s certainly made national news and become a cultural viewing event for many. I don’t watch Game of Thrones, but I can’t tell you how many of my friends disappear on Sunday need when the show is in-season.
This Jon Snow costume can be a lot of fun because capes are a lot of fun. Haven’t worn one recently? Trust me. Capes are fun. Check out this costume, and consider pairing with a female Game of Thrones costume to maximize the couples effect. Again, more on this in a moment.
6. Bavarian Guy
It’s October. You’ll probably be drinking beer. Why not go to your Halloween party as the traditional, beer-drinking Bavarian guy. Octoberfest is sure to be going somewhere, and this will help you get into the spirit.
The wonderful thing about Halloween is that it gives you the chance to wear things you would never wear. Like suspenders. And hats. If you want a stein that’s full of beer all night long on Halloween, why not consider going as the Bavarian guy? And it’s a costume that you can save and wear over and over again. It’s never going to go out of style.
Best Halloween Costumes for Women in 2017
1. Wonder Woman — Best Overall!
There’s a huge reason why you must be Wonder Woman for Halloween: Has there ever been a more kickass female character in the history of the world? And there’s a huge reason why you must not be Wonder Woman for Halloween: So many other women have the same idea.
The last thing you want to do is end up spending Halloween night wondering if you pulled off Wonder Woman better than the other seven females who wore a similar costume. But, still, it might be worth it — just this one year.
Wonder Woman feels like a moment that’s been brewing for a long time. I’ll just be honest: It’s not just that woman are equal to men, it’s that we’re superior to men in so many ways. And, for whatever reasons, Wonder Woman captured that in 2017. That’s why this is the top choice overall.
Everything I said above about Kylo Ren, you apply the same things to Rey. We’re about to be inundated with Stars Wars news and marketing and speculation, and this character’s profile is about to reach heights untold.
If you love Star Wars, this is your best bet for 2017. You could opt for a Princess Leia costume or even a Mon Mothma costume if you’re deep into Star Wars lore. But nothing going to be quite as on target as showing up as Rey.
You could even make a case that Rey is just as kickass as Wonder Woman, and I wouldn’t fight you on it. I’m just thankful that we now have a relative wealth of strong female characters to turn to at times of importance — like Halloween.
Here’s a shift for you, and a statement that’s pretty obvious: Going as a Baywatch lifeguard isn’t nearly as empowering as going as Rey or Wonder Woman. It’s a hell of a lot of fun, and I can’t recommend it enough.
I did Baywatch once in the past, well before the movie came out. And you would be amazed at how fun it is to have a whistle as part of your Halloween costume.
Also, as mentioned above, this is a strong couples option. Going as Baywatch lifeguards with your significant other is relatively easy and a whole lot of fun.
Here’s another character that’s not quite as empowering as others. But, Beauty (or Belle) is a well-known character, and you’ll love the way you look in her outfit. This comes back to getting a chance to wear things that you would never wear otherwise. You can feel pretty in an outfit that no one would wear in the 21st century, and it’s all acceptable for one night only.
I’ve always loved Beauty and the Beast for some reason, ever since I saw the cartoon version as a kid. And I think we’re sitting at peak Beauty and the Beast right now. Which is to say: If you’ve been wanting to go as Belle at any point in the past, this is the year to do it.
Make sure you get the blond wig to go with it. I feel like I always see Emilia Clarke when she’s not done up as Daenerys, and she’s completely unrecognizable as a brunette. Still very much beautiful, but also very much unrecognizable. Get the blond wig, wear it, and make sure you check all the boxes for this costume.
This isn’t the best overall, but part of me thinks I’m saving the best for last. Full disclosure again: This is my costume for 2017. I binged Stranger Things this year (I know, late to the game), and I loved it — and I loved her.
I wrote earlier about female empowerment and strong characters that are leading the charge. Eleven is right up there with them. This is a fun costume (I mean, it comes with frozen waffles), and it’s one that I think many will immediately recognize and appreciate on Halloween night.
Final Thoughts on What to be for Halloween 2017
I only have one word of advice for Halloween costumes: Keep them fun. What do I mean by that? Halloween isn’t the time to make a political or religious statement. You may think that your costume says something really clever about Republicans or Democrats, and you may think that everyone’s going to laugh. But they won’t. Someone (or multiple people) will be offended, and they’ll forever remember the moment.
Or you may think your costume about Christians or Jews or Muslims is really funny. But I assure you it’s not. People who consider themselves members of those faiths really don’t find it funny, no matter how much you’re laughing on the inside.
There are so many costume opportunities (just look above!) that are won’t offend anyone. Choose one. And channel your political passion into community organizing, and channel your religious passion into evangelizing. Enjoy Halloween, and save the offensiveness for later.
